Flaar 24: A powerful, sporty sailboat from the lakes of Central Europe

Hungarian shipyard Flaar Performance Sailing unveils a 24-foot yacht designed with performance in mind.

A sailboat designed for lake regattas

The lakes of Central and Eastern Europe have no shortage of sailing and regatta enthusiasts, and Lake Balaton is one of the most popular waters for continental sailors. Based on the shores of this Hungarian lake, the Flaar Performance Sailing shipyard designs sailboats for the sailing conditions specific to this area. At the beginning of 2024, it launched a new 7.23 m model, the Flaar 24, designed for fast sailing and transportable to cope with a shortage of berths in Lake Balaton harbors. The 750-kilogram displacement yacht features a 200-kilogram lead canting keel with an electric jack, for a draught increased from 60 cm to 1.80 m.

Canvas and lightness

The Flaar 24 is an all-carbon-fiber construction, from hull to deck to rig. Weight is kept to a minimum in the ballast, while the generous sail area is designed for efficiency in light airs, with a 20.7 m2 mainsail and 17 m2 genoa as standard, and a 72.8 m2 asymmetric main spinnaker. A wiser version, with a smaller sail area, is available as an option.

The vast cockpit accommodates a crew of 1 to 6. The central tiller controls the two vertically rising rudders.

A small mainsail track is used to work the shape of the sail, while cross-rails are used for the genoa.

The height of the coachroof, perhaps a little high aesthetically, will be appreciated for its protection from the water, on this rather low-lying boat.

Basic equipment for fast cruising

If this isn’t your main program, you can enjoy a quick cruise on board. The central companionway gives access to a saloon with a forepeak that can be used as a berth, and two coffin berths under the cockpit. The companionway swivels ingeniously to hide the halyards coming down from the piano.

A central table, pivoting on the sponge, can be used for a modest meal or for navigation. An integrated refrigerator is available as an option, while modest storage compartments can be used for a little storage.
