Engines meeting the EU norms for Stage V marine engines can run on HVO with no extra certification, ending years of ambiguity among makers and users of the synthetic diesel.

Stage V engines are used in everything from luxury yachts and fishing vessels to commercial inland barges. EU Stage V marine engines are designed to meet the EU’s strictest emission standards. They are packed with advanced technologies to drastically reduce harmful pollutants and improve environmental performance.
Manufacturers like Volvo Penta, Cummins, Baudouin, and Sandfirden, offer a range of Stage V-compliant engines for use in existing diesel engines with no modifications, meaning no costly overhauls or downtime.
Notice of the green light for HVO without extra certification came from Euromot, the Brussels-based European association of internal combustion engine and alternative powertrain makers.
For years, European regulations were unclear if HVO needed extra certification. It is a direct replacement for fossil diesel but emits less soot and nitrogen, is climate-neutral and stable in storage.
