Tohatsu, Honda to develop electric outboard

Tohatsu Corporation has confirmed that it has entered into a joint development agreement with Honda R&D Co to collaborate on producing a 4kW electric propulsion system for small boats.

The small electric outboard under development by Tohatsu and Honda is envisioned to utilise Honda’s MMPe interchangeable battery pack

Under terms of the agreement, Tohatsu will develop the mechanical structure including the gear case and lower unit, while Honda will develop the electric powerhead.

The motor is expected to utilise Honda’s Mobile Power Pack removable battery system, described as a 50V, 26.1Ah lithium-ion cell with a capacity of 1,314Wh and a five-hour charging time.

Honda showed the battery, alongside a concept of a similarly sized electric motor, at the 2023 Düsseldorf boat show.

Tohatsu says it aims to commence field testing of the 4kW motor in the near future.
