The 2ndCHINA (SHANGHAI) INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW CHARITY REGATTA

The second running of this event broke records once again. Last year’s event, the first charity regatta in China had 28 entries, at the time the biggest grass roots inland regatta in China. This year the figure was surpassed with 35 crews competing on the water, from Optimists to Quarter Tonners.

It was true champagne sailing with the wind providing quite a contrast to last year’s almost drifting conditions.

With up to 17 knots at the masthead crews were taxed, sometimes beyond the limit with several capsizes, mainly among the multihulls providing the rescue teams plenty to keep their attention occupied.

Last year, in the Optimists the furthest travelled competitor Julian Qu from Iron Rock Sailing Club took runner’s up slot. This year his return visit was all the more meaningful as he topped out the event with an overall class win.

The multihull fleet was small but provided plenty excitement with multiple capsizes. Dirk Weiblen of SBYC proved that to finish first, first you have to finish (staying upright helps greatly in this endeavour)

The monohull fleet was by far the biggest with 24 entries. The starts were a gourmets delight with dicing, carving up and even a t-bone. Bird of Prey, with the owners sailmaker, Frank Gerber of North Sails on board overall had the best of the starts with his girlfriend and daughter not far behind on Four Dragons. These 2 quarter tonners along with the two top Red Dragons Black Pearl and Jolly Roger (strange they both have piratical names) were really on the pace.

In race 2 as Bird of Prey attempted to go past Four Dragons a luffing duel ensued with the boats at times inches from touching and there were many other head to heads throughout the fleet with the 2 top Red Dragons never far from each other either.

These four filled the top of the leaderboard in all 3 races with Bird of Prey filling the top spot overall followed by Jolly Roger and Black Pearl in 2nd and 3rd with Four Dragons just missing out on the silverware.

The real winner of the event, and rightly so however, was the Silent Angel Kindergarten, Shanghai’s only such establishment specializing in the treatment of autistic children with many sailors adding a bundle of money into the donation box and many media leaving with a little more understanding about this challenging ailment.

Thanks go firstly to Saimeng Water Sports Club for providing the venue and the race officers, to AGS Four Winds for sponsoring the transport to the venue on Dianshan Lake, as well as to everyone participated in this event and gave hands to children in need.

December 2008 General Release

Still Standing in an Economy Crisis
——Progress on the 14th China (Shanghai) International Boat Show

The winter of 2008 brings good news about the industry and sees progress being made in the China (Shanghai) International Boat Show (CIBS) at the end of China’s Olympic year. The show has developed into a strong industry event, growing at a steady pace, even in the face of a worldwide economic downturn.

Expectations of CIBS 2009

The 14th edition of CIBS will be held on April 16-19, 2009 in the historical Shanghai Exhibition Centre in downtown Shanghai. Although the global economy is in crisis, still, CIBS stands together with China’s yachting industry.

The next CIBS in April 2009 is expected to host up to 380 exhibitors, covering an exhibition space of 33,000 sq m. Visitor promotions will be even more effective, using various channels and targeting the 17,000 visitors onsite, of which 1,800 will be from overseas.

Official Regulations

In July 2008, the Department of Transportation of the PRC approved and published official regulations on Yachting Safety Management. The article comprised eight main chapters and 46 detailed rules that will take effect on January 1, 2009. The regulations clarify operations on registration, examination, licensing, sailing and mooring, and security, etc.

On-Water Display

A mere 15 minutes from the downtown venue of CIBS and, after several years of exploration and waiting, the show finally has a qualified marina partner located on the west banks of the Huangpu River, the pulsing heart of the city. The Shanghai Yacht Club, which is opposite the 2010 World Expo venue, will provide 24 berths during CIBS 2009, giving a home to quality yachts from both domestic and overseas manufacturers. The club will also prepare test “drives” on the HuangpuRiver for VIP buyers during the show period.

Exhibitor News

While the European and US markets are suffering from the severe impact of the economic crisis, the relatively stable Asian market is more attractive than ever.

The national pavilions of Italy, France and Australia have a good partnership with CIBS and, in 2009, the Italian pavilion will enlarge its size by inviting more companies to join it.

Jeanneau will display independently at CIBS 2009. Its brother brand, Beneteau, will present motorboats following its successful sailing boat promotion in China, with Lagoon bringing its catamarans to Shanghai next April. Chris-Craft has confirmed its attendance for the first time, while Princess Yachts has booked space to display a boat at CIBS 2009 following its four-year brand presentation. J-Boat announced at CIBS 2008 that its only Asian manufacturing base will be in Xiamen and the Shanghai boat show is definitely a key event that they would not miss.

Participation in CIBS 2009 has been confirmed by the majority of existing exhibitors, including The Bénéteau Group, nine brands from The Ferretti Group, The Azimut-Benetti Group, Brunswick, Sunseeker, Aicon, Horizon, Bavaria and The Megayacht Group, as well as domestic exhibitors, namely Double Happiness, Changzhou FRP, Zhuhai Sunbird, Xiamen Hansheng, Yihong, Feipeng and Wuxi Dongfang, etc. The equipment section and the club section have also been supportive.

Industry Development

Leading the academic section of CIBS, the China International Yacht Economy and Sight Water System Development conference has continued for seven years, conducted by China Boat Industry & Trade Association. According to incomplete statistics, 58 cities in China are developing sight water systems and yacht clubs. A Gallery is planned at CIBS 2009 to demonstrate the country’s improvement in sight water systems.

The development of China’s yacht industry over the past decade has gradually built a mature market, with upgraded techniques in manufacturing and huge purchasing potential. As an industrial platform, CIBS has always made an effort to communicate to professionals and consumers worldwide, and will work even harder in today’s global economic environment.

CIBS is honoured to present an annual industry event that is:

  • one of Asia's most comprehensive boat and yacht exhibitions and conferences
  • the only member in China of the IFBSO
  • audited by BPA Worldwide in 2008
  • certified by the US Department of Commerce

CIBS represents the entire manufacturing chain of the industry, from basic materials to ready-to-sail luxury boats. About half of the exhibitors, mostly luxury yacht-builders but also high-end equipment and technology providers for domestic boat yards, will come from overseas. Local exhibitors will mainly show small to mid-sized boats, and mid-range technology and supplies, creating an ever increasing market for international sourcing experts.

CIBS 2008 is honoured to provide the industry with an exhibition with more real boats on display, a larger area and more brands.

After strong sales in 2007, the luxury boat segment will be the centerpiece of CIBS 2008; following the successful promotion of its sister brands in China, Atlantis from the Azimut-Benetti Group will make its first appearance at the show, along with its boats. Other newcomers include Italian luxury motor boat builders InRizzardi, megayacht manufacturers Palmer Johnson (USA), Amels Holland (Netherlands), as well as the French brand Lancel, equipment suppliers John Deere (USA), Lewmar (England), MTU (Germany) and sailing boat brand J/Boats. With China becoming increasingly environmentally conscious, another highlight of the show, solar-powered boats by French builder Fatima DA SILVA, will be a magnet for visitors.

While new participants continue to flock to CIBS, “old” exhibitors are returning and, in some cases, extending their presence. They include long time supporters of CIBS and the China market such as Sunseeker, Ferretti, Beneteau, Azimut, Princess, Riviera, Aicon, Horizon. Also confirmed return exhibitors are renowned megayacht brands Fraser Yachts, Thyssenkrupp, and the Megayacht Group; Riva, which earned tremendous attention and won its first contracts during its debut at CIBS 2007; domestic twin-boat manufacturers Famila, which will present its boats following a trial participation at CIBS 2007; and large-scale domestic yacht manufacturers Double Happiness, Applause and Changzhou FRP, all of which are renowned for their experience.

With the background of maturing industry, local yachting clubs have developed rapidly in recent years, and gradually equipped with more professional facilities and better services for boat owners and lovers. Nine Dragon Marina, Natural Marina, Longcheer Marina and Shanghai Marina Club will be present at CIBS 20008.

The French and Italian pavilions, long-time supporters of CIBS and the driving force behind international cooperations, have enlarged their exhibiting space. However, other nations are also now tapping into the potential of the Chinese market, and CIBS 2008 will be supported by a US Mission Delegation and the presence of the Dutch association HISWA. Both are dedicated to fostering business opportunities and evaluating their enhanced participation in CIBS 2009.

In addition to trading and sales activities, CIBS 2008 will offer a range of satellite activities, such as sailing trials on DianshanLake, the first edition of the Shanghai Charity Regatta on April 12, a Family Day at the Nature Club, a Gala Dinner and much more. The full programme will be available by mid-March.

CIBS 2008 will meet the Olympic spirit of “higher and faster” by providing “more and better”. For more information and to see how you can visit CIBS 2008, please visit the official show website, www.boatshowchina.com.
